| I actually asked the doc about this before I got it done and was re-assured that I wouldn't set off the alarms! I also just had shoulder surgery, where they used some titaniam screws, and asked again (as they're so much bigger than the staples) and was told that they definitely won't set off the airport alarms. I've flown since the sleeve and not set any off, but not since the shoulder surgery. | |

| I've got titanium wires and a teflon plate in my head (that'll come as no surprise to anyone who's a regular reader of my demented contributions) from having a "rugby" injury repaired (results of a domestic dispute, actually). They've never caused any excitement at the airport. Admittedly, though, it is a small set of wires, and a lot of other people also have a lot of metal in and on their heads (spectacles; jewellery; fillings), so it could be that the scanners are set just to ignore this. They do cause excitement at the dentist's when I have x-rays, but that's just because the dentists always get nosy. Melbell's experience sounds reassuring. I suspect I have heard about larger, more solid bits of metal causing frustration at the security counter -- but we're talking replacement hip and knee joints and/or the kinds of massive pins they use to pull shattered thigh bones back together. Most security staff are happy with a doctor's letter and/or scans... but if you're going into the US, you'll be a suspect no matter what you do, so expect to be treated like a bubonic plague carrier no matter what: everybody will be. Best, Dark | |
