I had my gallbladder out at the same time I had my sleeve done. some surgeons will not do this but I wouldnt want a surgeon not feeling competent enough to do both at once. you do have to understand if the gallbladder leaks when removed they cant go ahead and do the sleeve. my surgeon has never let a gallbladder leak so had no concerns.

recover is no different besides some experencing more nausea. this means it is all done and not 2 surgeries. i would never hesitate to do this.

Talk to your surgeon - he may well take it out when he does the sleeve to save you another op, especially if you have existing GB issues.

Hi Claire,

There are quite a few on here who have had their gallbladder removed after the sleeve.
I myself had my first attack a year after surgery and like you ended up in the emergency dept where they thought I was having a heart attack. When I was cleared and no longer in pain they sent me home and a week later I had another attack and in the meantime I diagnosed myself and called my surgeon who put me straight in and removed my gall bladder (after appropriate tests of course.)

PostSubject: Re: Gall Stones after Weight Loss   Gall Stones after Weight Loss EmptyThu 11 Mar 2010, 1:29 am

the figure is meant to be 10% but I must know the entire 10% because it seems more like 30% need their gallbladder out after wls and if you ever had stones at all before it is 100%. But there is nothing saying 100% yet I am to see a single person who has had gallstones before from preveious weight lose not lose thier gallbladder after weight loss surgery. Me I had them before and it was horrible. There where a couple of non troubling ones floating around when I had my liver scan before surgery and I told my surgeon to ge that sucker out at the same time, and he did. The onl difference with having it out at the same time so I am told is a bit more nausea. If your surgeon is not that skilled he will refuse to remove it when he does your sleeve as there is a risk of empting the bile and if any stones into the stomach cavity when they remove it. If this happens by accident they have to stop and not do the sleeve, to greater risk of infection. My sugeon had never had that happen even in a stand along galbladder surgery so had no concerns at all that he would do it.

I say when having your liver scaned preop get them to check for gallstones as they also form being that fat word. If you have ANY signs of them see if your surgeon will whip that sucker out when he does your sleeve.

Gall Stones after Weight Loss Empty
PostSubject: Gall stones.   Gall Stones after Weight Loss EmptyWed 10 Mar 2010, 9:59 pm

Hi,

I had my gastric sleeve 4 weeks ago, and have lost about 14kg since starting the optifast stage.

The weekend just gone, I developed pain in my right upper abdomen, just under my lower rib which radiated round to the back. I ended up in A&E on tuesday because the pain got so bad.
They did an ultrasound scan, and I had gall stones. I was admitted to hospital and had my gall bladder removed.

I am at home now and I had a look on google and found out it is common to get gall stones following a period of rapid weight loss (something to do with an increase in cholesterol and a decrease in bile salts)

I am just interested to see how many other people on this forum ended up with gall stones after having the sleeve?

(I have a very sore, and very interesting looking belly now with the scars from the sleeve AND the gall bladder surgery!!)

HI Leah,

Thanks very much for your reply, its good to hear from someone else that Mr Leong doesnt put his patients on Opti Fast diet prior, I do have Penny's details but Mr Leongs receptionist told me that she doesnt really specialise in Sleeve patients but more so in LapBand patients?

Another quick question- Did you have to organise your own Anesthetist for the endoscopy & sleeve or does Mr Leong work with his own?

I look forward to your reply if you get a minute, thanks again Leah Gall Stones after Weight Loss 618285

Hey Vogue

I was sleeved by Dr Leong in November and also did not have to go on opti, none of his sleeve patients do, from what I from what I can gather, also the dietician if it is Penny Taylor you can book and see her 1:1 in Modbury, @ Paragon specialist centre, not sure if she is anywhere else, If it is her she is really really nice as it is who I am currently seeing, she is pretty booked up,, If you have PHI your out of pocket is about $30 but if you dont have PHI it will cost you approx $70-$80+ but worth it, well I think so anyway.

Penny also works with CSIRO and my mum is currently doing one of the diets that Penny helped to design in conjuction with csiro, there is a couple of diets that are being trialled and It is working for my mum,

Cant advise you much on the Gall Bladder stuff as I had mine removed a few years ago due to a large stone.

Good luck with it all, hope it all works out for you.

Hi Everyone,

I have had 2 lots of bloods come back with elevated liver enzymes- they were done by my own GP just a general health check up so I was a bit surprised.. Dr isnt worried & no doubt will send me for a ultra-sound. My only concern is that if they remain elevated that my surgeon Mr Leong will not do the sleeve on 22nd Feb. My endoscopy is the 8th Feb so Im feeling a bit unsure..

Ive also not been advised that I need to go on Optifast? When I rang Dr rooms and spoke to the receptionist & asked her about this she said that Mr Leong doesnt normally put ptients on Opti before the sleeve, he does with the band but not sleeve- does this sound correct to anyone?

Another query I have, Mr Leongs dietician that he uses comes to his rooms to do group info sessions etc but its only on the lapband diets etc, does anyone know of a dietician in Adelaide that specialises in sleeve etc.. ( thats if I need one??) Many unanswered questions but maybe also getting a little anxious & excited but now also feeling stressed with these enzymes! I soooooooo hope it doesnt prevent the process Gall Stones after Weight Loss 697586
I can help with the dietician but she is a bit expensive ...her name is Anita Comacchio. Dietitian. B.Sc.,B.Nutr.& Diet. Accredited Practising Dietician...just google her she works in different places...I work in the medical field & she is a very well respected bariatric dietician....BTW without seeing your blood results I cant be sure but raised liver enzymes should not prevent you op...

I had my lapband and gallbladder out at the same time in January. Very east recovery and if it wasn't for the one stone that escaped and caused me untold pain and another 6 nights in the hospital a week after discharge, I would have been raring to go.

It is easy Lynette and you will feel so much better following it's removal. Just remember to tell Dr P that he'd better not miss a stone like he did with me....I'm sure he'll laugh.

I can eat anything and everything without ill effect....I think you have to be very unlucky to have eating problems following the op. Most don't.

i had mine out on the 1st september. Surgery was pretty simple.....i had 1 extra day in hospital because my surgery was so late in the day ( so 2 nights all up)

I had a couple of days off after coming out and then went back to work...i was a bit tired for a couple of days then i was ok.

I just eat normally...nothing seems to effect me.

I spoke with my surgeon about gall stones after the sleeve and it happens in about 5% of patients so that is why they don't remove the gall bladder during the sleeve op and also other reasons of being on the other side of the stomach, time under anae and it is not essential that the gall bladder be removed if it is healthy. hope that helps!\

good idea with the flaxseed and lemon juice though!

PostSubject: Gallstones   Gall Stones after Weight Loss EmptyTue 08 Dec 2009, 3:55 am

I was booked in to have my gallstones/gallbladder removed many years ago. After talking to a naturopath who suggested having 2 tablespoons of Flaxseed oil and 1 tablespoon lemon joice half an hour before breakfast.
I was able to cancel the operation as the stones had passed after a week or so, the largest would have been the size of my smallest fingernail. Haven't had a problem since.
If anyone has stones around this size they could try the treatment, if they are larger then I guess the result is surgery. I know which I would prefer to try first.
Good luck

I have my gall bladder out 24 years ago, so this won't be a problem for me.
Full blown surgery and as I had a baby, who was in hospital with me was I was breastfeeding, I wasn't allowed home until I could care for him. 12 days in hospital. Boggled

Hi Lynette,
I had my gall bladder out a couple of months back (by my weightloss surgeon) and it was very similar to the sleeve surgery but easier. I find now that I can't eat or drink full cream products though and 90 % of foods go straight through me. I can't eat sweet stuff in excess either. This has meant that I have found putting on any more weight extremely difficult and I have become very regular on the toilet lol.
I too agree about the pain being much like childbirth. Originally it was suspected I was having a heart attack it was so severe.

That's good that you have the diagnosis. Do you think you could request the op to be done on a Friday? I had my gall bladder out a few years ago and only had an overnight stay in hospital. I don't recall any long term effects, was able to carry on as normal after a day or so. At least you may have the weekend to recover. Hope they can schedule you soon.
