| Has anyone had their tummy tuck through Padovan? Just curious if his results are better or similar than surgeons who are not so familiar with bariatric patients. Some of the surgeons in perth wont even operate on WLS people. | |

| Dr P did my sleeve a year ago.
For some reason - I forget what it was, now - I decided I'd wait and see how it turned out before I wrote about my surgeon. What if it all went to hell in a handbasket after I'd already written something good? lol
It's kind of difficult to say how completely awesome Dr P is without it sounding like empty-headed gushing.
He's so incredibly personable. I think I felt completely at home with Dr P within the first few minutes. I'm not special either - in the waiting room you can see how all his patients have the same easy relationship with him. It's kind of like a family. Anyway, Dr P made me feel like an individual and like he cared about me. He is definitely a patronisation-free zone!
I had some concerns that he addressed really well. First off, I was BIG - 158kg. Not the biggest, I know but still, pretty big. Also I had industrial strength sleep apnoea. He's been there and done all that. He wasn't dismissive or blase, don't get me wrong. It's just that he's done so many sleeves on so many people, he just wasn't fazed by anything I asked or said. I mean the guy has done literally hundreds of ops and let's be real - he's not doing them on skinny people! lol
My surgery went so well, I joke with Dr P that he didn't do an operation at all - just stuck some bandaids on my tummy and went out for coffee or something. It was almost an anticlimax - in on Monday, bored with hospital and stopped pain meds by Wednesday morning, home Thursday morning. My sister had flown in to take care of me but we spent the next 6 days maxing out our credit cards going shopping lol.
A big part of the Dr P thing is his team. I saw Deb Wicks for nutrition/dietary matters and Kylie Coventry for the psych assessment/support. They're fantastic too, so the whole situation was exactly what I needed.
I've been back a bunch of times for regular follow up. I was kind of expecting that over time they'd just be less interested or something but that's just not the case.
So ... if anybody's read this far maybe some facts might be useful:
* Started: 158kg
* Goal weight: 71kg
* Goal loss: 87kg
* Time elapsed: 53 weeks
* Weight lost: 61kg
* Starting size: 30 - 32
* Size now: 18 (but today I'm wearing my first size 16 bra since I was a teenager!)
* Foods I haven't had AT ALL since my op: Macca's; Hungry Jacks; KFC; Dominos; Coca Cola
(Actually that last one is something that defies understanding - how is that even possible? I used to have one or more of those every DAY! lol)
Anyway I was a bit intimidated by doctors and whatnot because I've been crapped on in the past and made to feel ashamed about being fat. In Dr P and his crew I found understanding, caring, respect, professionalism, experience, expertise, humour and friendliness.
I really wanted to put that on the record here.
... And then go back to lurking!

| Hi, I just had my op in december with Dr P. I think you will be in very safe hands with him. I was very worried about the surgery itself until my first appt. He put me at ease almost instantly. He is very confident and self-assured. From my understanding he has done close to 1000 sleeve ops and has never had a leak or serious complication. I didn't have PHI so had to ay privately. It wouldn't have been a problem if I did have it though (in fact he assumed I did initiallly). His staff are really lovely too (receptionist and dietician) Oh and he doesen't believe in optifast so you won't have to be on it pre-op. Can't go wrong with him in my opinion! Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know... | |

| Hi I'm pretty new on the site, still trying to figure out how to post etc.... but yep if you're looking for some info I may be able to answer some of your questions.
I'm just wondering if anyone who was done by Dr. Padovan would mind me emailing them and asking a wad of questions? Cheers![/quote]

| I saw Dr P last Thursday and confirmed my surgery booking for Monday 20th April. He was excellent, very easy to talk to and informative...I had thoroughly researched the sleeve and gone through the process with another surgeon, but he went through the band/sleeve comparison again, and made sure I was fully aware of risks, complications and no-guarantee of permanent weight loss.
I had to see his dietician afterwards, she is great, and neither require optifast (which I had started last week). I was advised to continue my healthy normal diet and not worry if I put on a bit of weight after being on Optifast).
Dr P dosn't require you to go to ICU as mandatory after the surgery like some surgeons. If you have a sleep study done (get one done by your GP prior to your appointment with him), he will require you to rent a CPAP machine if you need one (he only wants me on it for two weeks).
You also need to see his Psychologist (waiting for a call on that appointment) and have to have fasting bloodwork done - word of warning on this, Mount Hospital has changed legal contracts with the blood collection agency, so call the Mount Pathology and find the closest one to you (not PathWest or Western Diagnostics!).

| Just wanted to sing Dr P's praises. I am still waiting to be sleeved but he has removed my lapband and gallbladder and he was the best. Had some problems with gallstones escaping after surgery and ended up having an ERCP and an extended stay in hospital but he was excellent and very approachable about all of this and recommended the surgeon for the ERCP and set it all up with SJOH Murdoch emergency. Couldn't have asked for better service. His post op care in the Mount was top notch as well. His wife works with him and is a nurse. She is gorgeous and extremely friendly. As are all the members of his team to date. No complaints at all. Well, except for one. I'm not a fan of country music and he has it piped into his Mount clinic room. Don't know about the Waikiki one. Just take some earplugs if you hate it and you will be fine. LOL. That's the only bad thing I can say about him and that was a stretch but no-one can be too perfect!!

| Many thanks Apple :)
I have watched you and your husbands progress with interest throughout your journey and you should both be very proud of your achievements.
As you said in another post that I read...if you also didn't loose another kg it wouldn't be a huge issue as you too have got your life back!
Having a life is an amazing thing and until you come back from that terrible place that we were you actually didn't truly understand how BAD things really were....we all have a lot of living and loving to catch up on.
Your get-togethers appear to be very successful....Congrats there as well.
Take care Lisa xox | |

| I loved your post oldfart. I did not know which made me laugh more....skinny minny or optichuck! I personally only had one complaint about going to the mount hospital. All I could smell was the lovely smelling food eaten by the person next to me and could not have even a bite of it!! There also was a french looking guy with a moustache that kept coming to my bed asking me for my menu and what food I would like to order only to keep telling him that I could not eat cause I just had a sleeve... yet again.....I have to say it was nice to have someone come around and collect menu and to go through it with you but not a nice thing when you cant eat a single thing. Not nice to tease a fat pig with food..... Not to say that this is any reflection on Dr Padovan whatsoever...I am sure that If I could eat the food at the mount hospital would have been some of the best...it certainly smelt that way at least...... | |

| Posting this 5 days post op:
Spent 3 nights in The Mount hospital in a shared room with a guy who had a cpap machine on all night ......... had a few great laughts with some of the nurses and the staff were by and large very good. So surgery and stay in hospital was all good news as was Dr Padovan attendance and bedside manner :-) the whole affair gets my 5 star rating so if you like having operations and hospital stays go for it without hesitation. Yo the man Dr P ........

| Hi all
I had my first appointment with Dr P last week. He was very friendly (not bad on the eye either) and very thorough in his explanation. As per Oldfart below, because I had been on the forum and I had already decided on the sleeving I didn't have too many questions. My next step is a visit with his dietition and his associated psychologist. He is a firm believer in holistic medicine ie it is not just surgery, surgery is just a tool you need the complimentary therapies as well to help with changing behaviour etc. I got my surgery date on the first appointment. Once my funding is confirmed through APRA I will need to make another appointment to lock in the procedure and hospital I guess and I need the pre-op blood tests a week before. I too would recommend Dr P.

After completing his general surgical training in Perth and obtaining FRACS in 1999, Dr Padovan spent a further five years in subspecialty training and surgical practice in the USA. He has extensive experience in all aspects of the surgical treatment of obesity.
Dr. Padovan’s Philosophy on Weight Loss SurgeryBariatric (Obesity) surgery—permanently diminishing the volume of the stomach in order to limit caloric intake—is a serious procedure that should be performed only in very obese people who have been carefully screened to ensure that this is the best way for them to lose their life-threatening excess body fat. Therefore, the first step will be a detailed consultation with you, the patient. We will work closely together to ensure that your wishes are understood and respected, to assess your overall medical condition, and to make sure that you understand the risks and benefits of bariatric (obesity) surgery. Whether or not surgery turns out to be the answer for you, every effort will be made to find the appropriate solution for your specific condition.
In any event, surgery is only the first step on the road to permanent weight loss. Long term success requires significant dietary and lifestyle changes. That’s why we work with a qualified team of dietitians and other professionals to help you achieve your goal of lifetime weight maintenance. Thousands of individuals like you have succeeded in achieving this goal. If you stay the course, you can do the same. | My first visit with Dr Padovan was great he was very informative and even showed me a youtube video of the op (cause I asked) afterwards I had blood tests to do and that was it. At my second visit he asked me if I had any questions, but because I have spent so much time listening and reading on this site I didnt have any ........... I signed some forms saying he had told me all the cons, filled in my hospital admitance forms ahead of time and I was supposed to see the skinny minny but she didnt show up on the day, I have blood to do a week before the op, and once I catch up with the skinny minny I will know if I am on opti-chuck so as far as I know there aint nothing else until the op.......... but hell yes I would reccomend him any day ....... if I die on the table ignore all forms of praise in the above!!!! :lol:
5/10/2009: Now 83kg. Well I am still alive and kicking and the Doctor did a sterling job, his bedside manner and care was first rate as was the hospital staff highly reccomended.
