Welcome sickofbeingbig,

I went with Stephen Watson at SJOG Murdoch.
A good surgeon, but no follow-up or support.
However, I would say, that he is very compassionate.  On those grounds, worth-while contacting him.
Murdoch was IMHO, dangerous (I have had a further three admissions there, including two via Emergency Dept), and I would NEVER want to go back - and nor I will, I would rather be admitted as a public patient to Armadale; let alone advise someone else to go there!
My BMI was around 32. something when I saw him, but I did have co-morbidities.

My friend @juldon1 (who I met via this site) went with Leon Coen, and has had the very best of care and follow up.  He has a great team.
A lot of folk like Kevin Dolan (another friend who I met via bandingtogether.com loves him).

I think that the cut-off for having a gastric sleeve for BMI +/- co-morbidities is really not down to the surgeon's personal choice, I think that it is standards set by the private health insurers (PHI) for coverage.  But I could be wrong, and I am happy to be corrected on this!  Maybe contact your PHI?  They can also give you a list of 'preferred providers'.

You DO have a long history of trying to loose weight, this will go in your favour.
Has your weight ever been documented by your GP in the past?  And any documentation of attempts at weight loss?
If so, this will certainly go in your favour.

All the best, and please keep us updated!
It would be a good time now, for you to start your blog,
:)

Hi,
I am in a very similar situation with my weight and my BMI sits around 33. In am 87.5kg and only 163cm tall.
I am going through Dr Alan Thomas at Upper GI West. I do have Poly Cystic Ovarian Sydrome, which is classed as a comorbidites.
One thing I would suggest is talking to your GP and seeing if you have some underlying conditions that may lead to a comorbidiy, such as non alcoholic fatty liver, or insulin resistance... It seems silly to have to basically look for something to make you appear sick, but i suppose you are trying to prevent getting to the stage where you are getting diabetes, heart disease or even putting on extra weight just to qualify?!

Wishing you all the best!
Sherri

hello sweet, my surgeon was/is Dr Harsha Chandraratna, he and his team are the ducks nuts!!
call his office obesity surgery WA on 9332 0066 ask to speak to Sue and explain it all to her. Harsha has had the surgery himself and so has Sue, but in saying that, his whole team are absolutely amazing, they are non judgy so you keep your dignity. will they perform the surgery with your particular circumstances? i dont know, but i cant recommend Harsha and his team highly enough! make sure you talk to Sue about everything youve mentioned in your post, she will give you advise, so you can make the best decision for you.
ive also heard great things about Dr Leon Cohen and have had two friends that have used him with great success.
goodluck

Hi everyone, I have been reading this site for over 2 years and keep thinking about having the sleeve done but then always trying to lose weight the natural way but I have had enough. I have been dieting and struggling with my weight since I was 12 years old, I'm 27 now and sick of being big! I have tried every diet, not 'dieting' just being healthy, exercised, hypnotherapy, juice cleanses, you name it I have done it and can't lose or keep off more than 5 kgs. I am always around the 95kg mark and 168kgs, I am clinically healthy but my whole family are obese, mum has had 2 severe heart attacks in the past 5 years (she is only 51) and now has 7 stents, she has type 2 diabetes, sciatica, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, many many other things due to her weight and my siblings are following suit. I am the healthiest of all but still large. I have just signed up for top hospital and extras through Medibank and now am looking for a surgeon who will operate in a years time but Jon Armstrong's receptionist has said he won't operate on anyone with BMI of 35 of less with no comorbidities. Has anyone had any experiences with a surgeon who has operated as I have looked on most of their websites and emailed them and none responds or the website says 35+. Hoping they won't turn me away as I am definitely headed in the wrong direction and as they say, prevention is better than cure! Looking forward to your responses and being part of the sleeves community :)
