| Hi All,
This is my first post in the post-op section....as an actual post-op person! woo hoo!
I ordered some Cyborg online today, they say an average serve is 25 grams of protein SO assuming it's not horrible to taste I'm really looking forward to it!
I'll log back here once it arrives and let you all know the verdict.

| Hi Sutika,
That's great, sounds like you're going pretty well considering. I'm yet to have my surgery or start my pre-op diet so am just a bundle of nerves at the moment! lol!
I have only taken 2 weeks off work but also have a desk job, so hopefully this will be enough time. Worst case, I should be able to work from home for a few days after the 2 weeks.
Sorry to ask you a 101 questions BUT as you're a newbie....has the "hunger" thing gone like I've been reading about or is it more about not being able to overeat in your opinion???
plp aka...21 days out from her surgery and excited but WAY too anxious for her own good girl :)

| Hi plp :)
I had two weeks off work, some have more, nut I had already had some long leave prior to the surgery and I have a desk job. Yes, it has been a little challenging, I am quite tired by the late afternoon, but nothing dire. I also have to be really organised to make sure I eat and drink things with the right spaces in between, it takes a bit of concentration. I am not drinking enough water, not because I can't drink enough but because you really have to be sipping all the time and I get distracted and forget. I am putting a glass of water on my desk at work an trying to get through a few of them while I work but still not there yet.
How is everything with you???

| Hi Sutika,
Great to hear that you're going well with the pureed diet! I hadn't even thought of baked beans, but of course they are a great source of protein!
How long have you had off work? Was it hard going back? How have you been going with drinking the required amount of water? I'm not much of a water drinker, so am a tad bit anxious about that.

| Hi plp thanks for asking :) I am onto purée now and right now I am eating some puréed baked beans with puréed ham and yoghurt. Simple and yum!
My energy levels were quite good but I went back to work last week and on the weekend I was exhausted. I think it is just adapting to new smaller meals and vitamins etc. Hopefully I will pick up soon!
Hope you are well.

| I am yet to see anyone mention Cyborg in here - I'm surprised, since my facebook groups are all over it. It's a non-milky ultra high protein drink in fruit flavours for those who dislike, are sick of or can't tolerate milky shakes. Apparently it taste like a really good cordial :) Word is, the cheapest place is to PM the facebook site Cost Price Supplements for a quote. Their turnaround is really quick and I've yet to see a single complaint. They're building a real website right now :)
Also, for anyone who wants a non-flavoured protein to add to just about anything (including cottage cheese, yoghurt, soups etc), I've just opened my bag of Gladiator WPI and it is really nice. No real flavour at all, almost no carbs, no sugar, no gluten, no lactose. Got mine from supplementmart.com.au (they also have a bunch of real stores, too) for a good price :)

| Thanks Sutika, I'll check it out.
How are you going with your post-op diet? Are you still in the liquid stage? How are you feeling? What are your energy levels like?
Thanks again, plp | |

| all good tips for you here Peta :)
I cannot recommend this Nutrition book by Sally Johnston highly enough which has recipes for every phase of the journey:
http://www.nutritionforweightlosssurgery.com/our-products/
It is worth every cent of the $45 Price tag. I am on the post op liquid phase and pretty over sweet drinks over two weeks of Opti. There are soups ands savoury smoothies along with the sweet stuff. milk and yoghurt are high in protein as are nuts and I have just ordered some Beneprotein online which is tasteless so you can add it to anything you make.
If I thought I would be on milkshakes for the rest of my life I am not sure I could it.
My best tip if you don't have one is buy a stick/hand blender. You can just blend the soup in the pan you cook it in or make smoothies on the spot. Easy peasy and quick.

| Wow, good on you for losing so much weight and for having the strength to do it pre-op!!!
I think its the protein gym junkie style shakes, they mention the optifast pre-surgery but all different brands afterwards.

| I've not had any real issues, so far. I did have to start Nexium for reflux - which i've not had previously. I'm hopeful that will settle though.
I've been lucky in that my recovery has been pretty smooth. I'd lost half the weight I need to in the 7 months before surgery - definitely think that has helped my recovery.
Also feel like I was in a good headspace prior to surgery. I do not feel like I'm missing out on food - mentally or physically.
Do the americans used VLCD shakes, or other "protein shakes", like the gym junkies use?

| Hi Box of Jewels,
I'm not too sure and don't want to generalise about all Americans lol but the youtube videos I've been watching are of people 6, 12, 18 months into their journey. if you search "vsg" or "gastric sleeve" in youtube you'll find loads of videos of sleevers from the USA and most all of them discuss protein drinks as a way to ensue they meet their daily dose.
I'm not a vegetarian but am not a big meat eater. But, I figure that I won't eat anything too "big" once I'm sleeved though right? lol!
How are you finding things so far? Has it been a good experience or still too early to decide?

| How long do the americans do that for?
I'm 3 1/2 weeks out, so can't physically eat anywhere near enough protein or calories. So, for me, I'm doing 2 shakes and 3 "meals". Hoping as I can eat a bit more, to drop at least another shake. But, also think as a vegetarian, that I might struggle to get enough protein in forever. So, figure that I'll be using shakes at least a few times a week to boost my nutrition - maybe forever? Who knows.

| Hi Sally,
Wow, I feel so much better now! I'm also lactose intolerant so the idea of shakes on an ongoing basis is something that I was very worried about. Thus, the idea of trying some out and hoping to find one that didn't make me vomit and/or ill.
As I mentioned, all the american sites seem to integrate the shakes into their daily schedule. I like the idea you mentioned of bulk cooking, I think it may help ease me into cooking. I think eating "real food" will definitely feel/taste better.
Thanks again for your support Sally, I love this site already!

| Im lactose intolerant and never had to suffer the shakes for more than a week once my dietitian figured out what was going on. I get more than enough protein from real food, and I prefer it this way, if I had to put up with the shakes I never would have lasted long with them. If you love the shakes and happily enjoy them, then thats all good too as they are a good source of protein and other nutrients, but I get so much more enjoyment out of a small piece of steak or chicken or fish and some veg or salad for a meal :)
With regards to the cooking, I make up bulk protein foods to freeze, that are quick to cook or reheat and taste good too. Look for things like tuna (or salmon) cheese croquettes, chicken patties that can be eaten like nuggets for snacks (just chicken breast/thigh and spices in the food processor and whiz and shape). I made meatballs last night and froze the leftovers in lunch size portions, slow cookers are also great for cooking up meat to freeze that you can then use in salads/wraps/taco salad etc . Take a look on pinterest theres heaps of handy ideas for make ahead protein filled foods :)

| Thanks Sutika, I think a big part of my education is going to be on healthy cooking and food preparation. I'm not much of a cook and to be honest, when/if I can get takeaway instead of cooking...I do...thus my problem.
I think I'll look on this forum for some cook book/ recipe recommendations and start making a real effort to make time for meal prep.
It's all a little overwhelming at the moment but I'm still keen to make this work!
I joined the September monthly too, thanks :)

Kickstart is my favourite. Even more so because my health fund paid for most of it (HCF) through a healthy weight for life program.
I usually whizz them up with the 200ml of water, but at least another 100 of ice. And, I bought some sugar free syrups (Gloria Jeans sells bottles of it for $15 each, but I recently got Torani sugar free syrups (from USAfoods online - only about $10 a bottle, and $7 postage, good deal). I whizz them up in them and that seems to make them more palatable too. Hi Box of Jewels, Thanks for your tips. By the sounds of it, I probably need to try out a few and see what sits best with me. Maybe its the Americans, but all the youtube videos and blogs I've seen seem to say that people have protein shakes on a daily basis as part of the normal diet. I understand that pre-op is optifast followed by liquids and then mush etc., but I was asking more about the longer term diet. The idea of sugar free syrups is fantastic to add flavour, i'm addicted to my vanilla/hazlenut/caramel lattes so needed to find an alternative. I'll check out USAfoods online. Thanks for the heads up! Thanks again, PLP

| Hi plp
Don't forget to join the September group if you haven't already, you will get lots of support there.
Re, pre op protein shakes it does seem to be very personal. So speaking personally I quite liked both the coffee and chocolate shakes made up with icy cold water. Others prefer other flavours but they were then only ones I found drinkable. Optifast sells a sampler pack with the full range of flavours which I bought and tried before my two week diet to figure out what I liked.
I didn't try other brands but if you do a search you should be able to find a lot of advice.
After surgery you are probably just as well to make your own soups and smoothies with high protein ingredients as you will vet a lot more variety and choice.

| Hi Everyone,
I'm booked in for surgery on the 21st September and have my pre-op appointment on the 2nd September.
Having done loads of online research, I've come to realise the importance of protein shakes to ensure I get enough daily protein. The one thing I'm reading time and time again, is that they taste horrible!
Can anyone recommend their preferred brands and flavours? I thought I might do some pre-surgery taste testing to narrow down the options and hopefully, make my transition post-surgery easier.
Any advice would be most appreciated, PLP
