| I have found good quality "withings" scales to be out by 20%.
BUT skin counts for fat in a dexa scan which is also inaccurate for those of us who have lost 50K plus.
anything is a guestimate.

| My DEXA body fat was 47.2%, my fitbit aria scales on the same day said 48.5% The body fat calculator says 58.4% based on measurements taken 4 days later. I was very pleased with how similar the aria scales were to the DEXA scan. Hope that helps | |

| I'd love to have a DEXA done to check on my bone density status - I am 52 and believe that I am now post-menopausal.
I used to work in the Bone and Calcium Research Group for UWA, and we used heel ultrasounds as a basic measurement - mine were always low, and I was at least 16 years younger then, and carrying a lot more weight than I am now. Do-it-myself-weight-bearing-exercise lol! DEXAs were performed on some (I can't remember if all) of our research cohort.
Anyway, for those of you who have had DEXAs done, and have body fat scales, how do they: a. compare to each other re accuracy (yes, I know that DEXA are the gold standard), and b. how does this formula http://www.calculator.net/body-fat-calculator.html tally with either body fat scales or DEXA?
Thanks! :) | |

| I just had my pre-op DEXA today - it was very interesting and confirmed what I believed - though I have lots of fat to lose, I also have a good lean muscle mass and bone density.
Has anyone else done a pre-surgery DEXA?
Mick - how did you other DEXA scans go? Was it useful to monitor changes?

| Hi Greenfrog,
They recommend every 3 months but it's totally up to you, my next in the end of Feb on the same day as my surgeon follow up., which is 7 weeks from today.
I am a bit lucky as 7 years ago I had 5 kg of skin removed in a body lift. I "think" I can estimate I have about 6 to 8 kg excess skin now.
They did tell me although the dxa scan is currently the medical standard in accuracy there has been no studies of excess skin and it's effects on reading.
That being said ::::: I can as a layman plainly see on the scan the excess skin as fat and can as an educated guess knock 10-15 % fat off my score.
After all is said and done , I fit into either men's small or large boys clothing so I am far from disappointed. :-)

| A couple of questions, Do they recommend a time between scans? or is it up to you? and if you know, how does the excess skin skew the results? is it a similar composition? | |

| Thankyou for posting this, I'm going to give them a call tomorrow. It'll be great to know how much fat I have left & what my goal weight should be. | |

| Am I big boned? Do I have more weight to lose? where am I carrying my weight? or simply “what is the healthiest weight specifically for me”
Most of us have read the limitations of the dreaded BMI some of us even take comfort in that it’s not accurate, now that I am “around” what I “should” be these questions have been nagging at me.
The medical professionals are really no help, my Surgeon, Dr and Dietitian came up with “healthy goals” that were differing by up to 15kg! they say BMI is crap but still use it ! My dietitian says I would have 15 to 20 kg of extra muscle , I work on a very physical job but this is clearly a guesstimate at best - and plainly wrong.
I have “body fat scales” but they are working on a algorithm for your weight and height NOT really scanning fat at all, but water, for example my son is 4 cm taller if I use his info on the scales I have 16% body fat , yet mine says 22.8% so clearly it is not really checking me or my fat per say but my age , weight , height , water content averaged.
From my research the current gold standard of where YOU are at is the the full body dexa scan, I was thinking of doing this and found out a local x ray only 800 meters from home that offer the service at very cheap rates, I have chosen a package of 4 scans over a year for $200.
This is the link to their site for more information and sample reports etc. http://bodycompositionqld.com.au/bcinfo.html
The first scan today is to just see of course where I am at, the others to help maintain and keep me on track for that important 1st year after the weight has been lost.
My appointment was for 3.30pm and I got in at scan took 4 mins results explained in 5mins all up I was in and out in about 20 mins
And the results are in:
Bone density -.3 right in the middle of the acceptable range of -1 to +1 - Awesome Central Fat (Visceral) .839 recommended under .9 - Awesome Overall fat 26.1% - not so great - according to them recommended 11-21%*
*This does not take into account excess skin of which they say will skew the results somewhat and I have plenty
Of course even though this is the “gold standard” there are differing opinions on what is “normal” here also according to this site http://www.builtlean.com/2010/08/03/ideal-body-fat-percentage-chart/ on the first graph at I am overwieght and the second chart I am in the normal middle range for my age -- and this is not so perfect when you have excess skin “apparently”.
Overall I am happy and probably about what I thought it would be, so my next scan is late Feb on my follow up with the Surgeon and I will take the report in with me.
