| HI Mapmar
I just wanted to thank you for your concern about my stomach spasms. I ended up calling my doctor the next morning and after much analysis of what I'd been eating, I mentioned that I had gone for my first swim... Bingo! I had thought that would be 'gentle' excercise but apparently not. Woops - I hadn't realised that swimming would affect me so much. I won't be doing that again in a hurry - the spasms in my stomach were unbearable. Not a reflux problem and I seem to be feeling much better now so hopefully I haven't done any damage. Thanks again,

| Hi MapMar
I've been eating constantly - I really just 'graze' on small amounts all day. Although I have taken Nurofen in the morning whilst having an UpNGo drink - no real food in stomach then. Thanks for replying. I'll definately see the Doc tomorrow if this continues. I couldn't move for about 30 minutes while the cramps were taking hold!

| Are you taking Nurofen/Panadeine on an empty stomach? This can cause stomach cramps/ulcers..... If it happens again I would see your GP/Surgeon. Take care! | |

| Hi All I'm 5 weeks post op and am trying to find answers to some severe pain I've experienced today. I finished my first script of Nexium 4 days ago and then today I've had two 'episodes' where my stomach went into severe cramps and spasms - brought me to tears both times. Even though I've never had reflux before the op - and I've never had the type of reflux that others seem to get in their throats. Do you think that these stomach cramps may be a different symptom of reflux? I've got a smaller dose of Nexium tablets to use but Doc says that as I haven't had any problems so far that I should just take them when necessary. I've just taken one to see if it helps. Suppose if it keeps the cramps away then it may have something to do with reflux. The only other thing I've done differently lately is take Nurofen since yesterday. I've had smallish cramps for the last few days, and thought I would try Nurofen instead of Panadene. Would this be giving me the cramps? If it keeps happening I'll contact the Doc, but I'm just desperately looking for answers tonight. If anyone has any advice I'd be really greatful. Thanks,
Loz x | |

| I was just looking up reflux and found this thread, very helpful thanks all.
I am day 5 postop and since getting my NG tube out have noticed that either when I lay down to sleep, or overnight I wake up with the heavy kind of feeling at the base of my throat like something is squirming around. Sitting up for about 10 minutes makes it go away. Told surgeon and he explained it like this which makes sense:
The suture line along the new stomach makes it quite stiff. It can't stretch, and the stuff can't get through easily immediately postop, so it comes back up. He explained that over time, as the scar tissue relaxes and the tummy gets some stretch back, as well as the swelling reduction letting more fluid through quicker, the reflux improves. Actually he said for most people it's gone by 3-6 months postop, although some do keep it for longer. He did remind me that just as our outside scars have to heal and soften, so does our tummy scar.
I started the nexium today (my first pill, hard to go down!) and had the same awful waking from my nap this afternoon, even though I slept with several pillows fairly upright - so hoping it only takes a few days to kick in :). I do think I'll get some gaviscon or something as I did find that helped in hospital, although it's quite chalky and foul heh.
I am still less than a week postop, and currently my diet consists of apple juice, cup a soups or strained cans of soup, cordial/water and sustagen.
As I told my surgeon, if reflux is the worst side effect of the sleeve, I am quite okay with that.

| Hi I was on 40 mg of somac since surgery last october and did not have a problem with reflux unless i diod not take my tablet. 5 weeks ago however I got severe reflux that did not go away. My GP upped my somac to 2 a day for a short while and it did get a little better but I still have bad days. went back to my surgeon. Had another barium swallow and it looks like I have a hiatus hernia. Whether its been there all along or is something I have developed I dont know. Booked in for a gastroscopy next wednesday and will see from there. So what have I been doing for the past 5 weeks to keep it under control. Sleeping elevated. Type of food doesnt affect me but time I eat. I try to eat before 7. and stay up until 10. This helps. I was also told to drink more in the morning and less at night as fluids can stir up gastric juices. If all else fails I drink gaviscon. My guess is that I will have to go back in and have more keyhole to fix it but will see. I suppose the big questions is do I regret the surgery. The answer is NO WAY. | |

| I have reflux all the time when not medicated. If I eat then, I vomit. So the actual reflux pain doesn't get worse after that, but a new symptom pops up. | |

| It really doesn't seem to relate to when I eat, I think more to what I eat. Last night I had a small piece of naan bread, (homemade), with my dahl, and I had some reflux. Only light, though. So I think it is more if I eat carbs, or a bit too ful. It is really mild now, though. Cheers, Wendy | |

| But does it have any relationship to when you last ate? Or do you just have reflux without any relationship to when you last put food in your stomach before laying down for the night?
Thanks. | |

| Hi, I wrote the quoted post almost 3 weeks ago. The reflux is improving, and we are planning to take the phonebooks out from under the head of the bed. I will slowly go to flat, but will keep taking the losec. After a while I will see. The reflux problem is nothing compared to my previous eating habits - will go with the reflux over binging and being enormous any day...... | |

If anyone experiences this, can you tell me if it has any relationship to how late at night you eat?

| I had reflux before my surgery. I was on Pariet and so far it's working well. I think I have an intolerance to milk and if I drink it, the reflux comes back, even when I'm on the Pariet.
I take mine at night. | |

| Hi Diamonds,
When I left hosp, I was given a prescription for Pariet by the discharge Doc (this was a mistake apparently). My surgeon (David Martin) had asked me to crush all my tablets for a couple of weeks and I didn't find out, until I filled my prescriptions on the way home, that this wasn't possible with the Pariet. I mentioned this to Dr Martin when he called me the next day (he rang me every day for the first week I was out of hospital to see how I was) and he told me that while it wasn't the one he used any more, as it is so small it should be fine, and it was.
I haven't notice a difference if I take them before or after food. I'm not very disciplined about the time I take my tablets, but my instructions only say "morning" and I haven't had a problem. I just looked up the consumer information (here's a link)and it doesn't mention anything about having to take it at an exact time.
I've tried stopping it twice so far, and each time have had mild, but unpleasant, symptoms return so it's definately doing the job for me.
Cheers - Carrie x | |

| Went and saw my GP- he gave me Pariet 20mg. said it is better than losec?! i dunno but i figured he had to know what he is talking about. He said it was a newer one and better than than losec/nexium etc- which i thought was weird, wouldn't they all be as good as each other? seems they work for you guys.
took one yesterday afternoon- and i did have a much better night. Still slightly the same feeling but it wasnt enough to keep me awak so maybe after a few it will get under control. These ones have to be taken at the exact same time, everyday, much like the contraceptive pill. He said whether you have eaten or not doesnt matter but i wonder.....
so see how we go.
thanks ladies

| I have had terrible issues with reflux, even now 14mths out. I am on somac 40mg once a day. Nexium just didn't do it for me. I feel sick, then I get the need to be sick after eating. If I take my meds I feel 100% better. I always thought reflux would just be burning, but its not. | |

| also if one type of reflux medication doesn't work you can try another one or upping the dose.... but always check with your gp first and also how long you should be on them.... also take them 30mins BEFORE eating, as then it lines your stomach and you get a better effect from them. | |

| there are so many weird symptoms you can get that indicate reflux after the sleeve rather than the normal acid rising in your throat. Some of them are stomach cramps, hunger, empty feeling. pain when eating especially going to mushies..........
If you have a weird symptom the first thing to suspect is reflux as it can be ruled out or treated with ease. If your surgeon doesnt put you auto on reflux meds after surgery I suggest grabbing a pack of chewable quick ease and try one of those if you get a weird symptom and if the symptom lessens go talk to you GP about reflux meds for a few months.

I also had hiatus hernia repair done same time as sleeve. I am still on Nexium. Have tried to stop taking but if I take any less than every 2nd day I get reflux back. My surgery was nearly 2 years ago.
