| Sophia everything you're doing sounds very sensible and if you don't mind I think I will follow your lead. I want to weigh myself once a week post surgery (who am I kidding) but know that I will be sorely tempted to jump on everyday. Then you set yourself up for disappointment when the plateaus hit. Been there done that with the band. So I am going to try so hard to be sensible this time around. It took 6 years for me to stack back most of my weight and I know it's going to take a while to get it all off again. As my signature says absurdly grateful!!! Sending shrinking thoughts your way Lib and Wombat. Those scales will start moving again.

| Hi Nelly, glad you have returned. Like you have since read, quite a few people stall a bit in their weight loss at about week 3 when they go from liquids to mushies so you are not alone there.
Sophia, what you are doing does not sound compulsive to me. Your weekly graph is tangible evidence of your achievements and a wonderful resource to turn to when your head starts playing games with you. I have a wayward head too!

| Hi Nelly! Welcome back! You are doing better than I am, I haven't even entertained the thought of exercise yet!! And chocolate scares me, I am worried about the hot flush and stuff that comes with sugar overload!
I only seem to have notifications on some threads, but I get emails immediately when a topic is replied to. Hence me answering you straight away!
Hang in there, we'll get there!!

| Don't worry Nelly
I went through stages as well - what I found was good was to measure myself as well as weighing - my size seemed to continue to go down even when the weight didn't. Perhaps measure yourself for every 5kg you lose.
I've measured my bust, waist, hips and thighs - some people also measure upper arm etc.
Don't despair - things will move!

| Hi there, I am now well over 3 months out.
There have been a few days when I haven't weighed myself each day - yeha - but I am in a different headspace now which is good.
What works for me is that I write down my weight every day in my diary. Once a week, I have a set weigh-day, where I record weekly losses. In the front of the diary, I have a graph, where I colour in little blocks that stand for each kilo, and where I mark my major goals and when I hope to acheive them.
Yes, it sounds a bit compulsive, I know. BUT - I am at the stage where I have lost 21 kgs, have 10 + to go, and it feels like time is standing still (I am very impatient!). Instead of my head playing tricks on me, I look in my diary, and it is substantive proof that this really is happening.
I have gone from size 20/22 to size 16/18, but I still feel quite fat some days (and I think that overcoming a life time problem with body dysmorphia is not going away quickly!) so I like to record stuff. When I platueau, I don't stress, cos I know that it won't last forever. I don't write down what I eat each day (which I probably should) but the daily weigh in keeps me focussed on reality not head games about platueaus. Sophia

| I'm 10 months out and someone asked me the other day how much lost per week, as she was going to Weigh watchers or something like that! I said that with the sleeve it was hard to tell particularly now as 1) I weigh every other week 2) I can saty the same for weeks then loose a terrific amount in a very short amount of time, I would say I am losing 1/2 stone a month/ 7llb/3/4 kgs roughly. That is not a lot but I'm happy for it to continue like that as it is not much effort to maintain, and I only want to lose another 12kgs. The nurse told me it would be like this, and when I first had it done I was totally obsessed with the scales, I only ever get on after a huge poo, a lot of exercise and with no clothes in the morning...AND more importantly not too often! | |

| hey lib,
i know its hard but don't stress about the weight stall at this stage. (i can say that now but i know i also panicked just the same as you.) when you move into a new stage of food, either mushies or soft solids, it usually takes a week for your body to adjust. i think week 3 is the hardest week mentally of the first six weeks. i am sure we all layed in hospital dreaming of getting to the mushie stage then when you get there it seems it takes all day to get through the meals and somehow you have to fit in the water as well. on top of all that, thats usually when the constipation hits home!!
so in hindsight, i can only advise you to be patient and let your body enjoy the nourishment you are giving it and keep drinking that water. once your body has caught up the weight loss will start again. i can remember the week i put on weight was the same week that i finally didn't feel thirsty anymore.
keep up the good work, cause as you said yourself, you CAN'T give up. LOL.

| Now don't you be going all "postal" on us Wombat. It will come off in it's own good time. I often think of my fat like I do naughty children. Hard to predict and it always misbehaves at the most inappropriate moments. So take heart you will train it eventually and like all good Mother's reap the rewards one day. Well that's the plan anyway. I'm here for you. Oh and please feel free to yell at me when I whinge too!!! Hugs, | |

| Lib, I beat you, I gained 800gm overnight. I was *so* not impressed.
I really think I am going to be sceptical about this until I am under 80kg. Then I will know for sure that it works. I know that probably dosn't make sense, but hey I'm an irrational female and it makes perfect sense to me.

I'm sure the scales will move down again for you. Just give your body time to adjust to it's new conditions.

| Thanks for all that information. Its a good read! Still no loss, a gain of 200g today, but I will just wait it out. I said to my DH today, if I was on a diet and I hadn't had a loss I would have given up by now!!!n Can't do that!!! | |

| This little insight may help you. I have lost weight on a reduced calorie diet before. This is one of the reasons the sleeve to me just makes sense as something more permanent. In essence its a reduced intake which is the same concept as reduced calories.
Normally in the first few weeks of weight loss you may either see slight gain or a decrease in weight followed by a gain. From what I've been told this is due to two reasons. Increased nutrition resulting in muscle fluid or mass or the soft fatty tissue decreasing. The later is the first part of the fat to be metabolized and when you have past that stage your weight loss may plateau. Normally within a few weeks it kicks back in and weight loss continues as your body starts to metabolize the rest of the fat..
Other factors such as the quantity of food, liquid intake, water retention, exercise, clothing, day of the month (in woman) can vary your weight quite significantly.
I notice my own weight loss after sleeping is at its lowest first thing after the morning purge. At night after I have had my evening meal and drink and let it settle for several hours for the factory to start churning. Before I go to bed its pretty much back to the same as the morning plus any food intake. Next day I notice it magically creeps down slightly. Ahh the wonders of the obsessive dieter.
Anyway the 2L of water thing - is a guide as some people cannot drink that much, are eating liquid based meals, exercising or already full. I do know one thing from reading a survival guide on avoiding dehydration. Small amounts of fluid spread over the day. It can also be dangerous to over drink as you put your electrolytes out of balance and lose too much salt.
I read some time ago bypass type surgeries can have salt problems because of not having the full digestive capacity anymore something like that perhaps someone here knows more about it. I don't think it relates to sleeves at all.
Here's some info on drinking for anyone interested. http://www.ichoosethin.com/Why_Drinking_Water_Is_Important_To_Weight_Loss.html
So hang in there! I've hit the hump before and you just have to ride it out. If you were quite far into your weight loss and stall it can be a good idea to calorie / exercise count if you need to work out your deficit. But me I'd chill.
Oh one more thing. The Biggest Loser had contestants that had this happen after a few weeks of weight loss and you should have seen how devastated they got (as some put on weight after working out all week and eating nothing). It makes it all the better when you lose a bit afterward.
Any information I type is personal experience and frankly cannot be trusted please seek medical advice before doing anything stupid

| Hi I also feel my weight loss has been slow considering what I eat. Like Mama says we eat so little it should be dropping off us, however I did ask the doc and he told me the avg weekly weightloss expected would be 1Kg, I was horrified but can see just weeks later he is right. If I can lose a kg each week and it never come back then I'm happy. It will be slow but I will get there and like I read Deb right somewhere tonight, I can have my cake and eat it too so to speak, what a great way to lose weight. BUt by no means easy just maintainable.
Thanks for your sharing everyone, helps us all along.

| Hi all.... I dont think Ive lost anymore weight and I certainly am not going to go on the scales until I see my Surgeon on tuesday for the post-op check. Over the weekend, I've seen relatives and friends thatr havent seen me since I started the optifast diet and surgery, and all of them have commented on my shrinkage.... in particular my well endowed backside....lol I've also noticed that t/shirts and clothes that were well tight on me are now loose, and yet there is still no further weight loss as yet.... So Lib, when I see the Doc on tuesday I will ask him what is the "norm" of weight loss etc and will let you know asap. Hey, if Im shrinking elsewhere , who cares what the scales say ??? lol Hope everyone is feelign great Trish xx | |

| Lost basically nothing on my two week optifast stint, then lost nothing again during my 3 day hospital stay. But I lost almost 9kgs when I came out of hospital.
Then after a few weeks, I stopped losing again for almost 1.5 weeks, then I start losing again...and repeat.
When I look at how much I have lost in total, I lose on average 1-2kgs per week. It does even out, don't worry at all.

| Lib, my weight loss has stopped for the last couple of days as well at 95.8 - this morning it was 95.2, and I am seriously thinking the same as you...we've both had good losses and our bodies just need to catch up a bit. Dunno about you but I am also constipated now, and I am sure that isn't helping. I have increased my water, and increased my protein, plus did 15 minutes walking on the treadmill today, so it will be interesting to see if that helps.
I know my body is incredibly efficient but I was expecting a stall at three weeks, not at 1.5! I do weigh every day, but only pay real attention to the weekly loss. I know the lengths that I have had to go to previously with diet and excessive excercise, so it does worry me that this will be the same and only time is going to disprove that I think.
Oh, also, get yourself a protein shake rather than optifast - my nut suggested not to have optifast just yet as it swells in the stomach.

| Hey Lib
You'll probably find that a good part of your dramatic loss in the first weekish was water, ie you are probably dehydrated now. So if you have managed to drink more lately your body may be trying to hold onto that.
I noticed last week I only lost 1 kilo (would have liked more of course) but I did lose a good couple of centimetres from waist, hips, bust. Get the tape measure out and do some measurments once a week and you will see a difference.
I get on the scales every morning, I try to avoid at night because they are always heavier from the fluid and food from the day.
Don't fret, it will be ok.

| When we're eating soooo little it's amazing that the scales don't plummet daily!!!! But most of us are overweight because we have fabulously efficient metabolisms that can manage well on little fuel. So hang in there during the slow times - I heartily agree with Sophia and Ricey ... when the scales aren't moving try on some of your smaller clothes and see how much looser they feel and expect a bigger weight drop in the next week or two. And always tell yourself that what's gone has gone FOREVER!!!

| Hi Lib, honestly, don't stress too much! (Though I did when I first hit a platueau for 2 weeks!!). It will pass. Plug away and be patient. Your body is still working away for you. I found that my body seemed to shrink at the times when the scales didn't! Sophia | |

| Hi Lib,
3 days isn't really very long not to have a loss for. It just feels like it :) We all want to lose constantly but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Your body is a living thing and there is nothing we can do to make it do what we want. (lose daily.)
Everyone loses in different patterns and sometimes the patterns change for no good reason too. Just try not to get too obsessed with your daily weight, its more important to be less at the end of the month than you are at the beginning, and all those daily ups and downs just serve to make us miserable. I weigh daily, i know i shouldn't but too bad, lol! I just try to keep it all in prospective (sp).
Its a marathon not a sprint, as someone really clever once said hehehe! |

| Lib, at this stage you need to focus on healing your body, not your weight loss.
And I'm with Ricecake on this. Ever since surgery I've lost weight for a couple of weeks, and then nothing for two to three weeks, then repeat.
And while I'm as guilty as everyone else of weighing myself every day, it really is something you shouldn't do. Daily weight fluctuations are common and can be attributed to small things like eating too much salt, being pre menstrual, amount of water consumed, eating a late dinner (if you weigh in the morning) etc.
