What to expect after op? Empty
PostSubject: Re: What to expect after op?   What to expect after op? EmptyFri 27 Sep 2013, 2:25 am

Hi,
I am 9 days post op.
My surgery was at 8am. I got to the hospital at 6am. Did the admissions side of things then with three others and our partners we were escorted up to the surgery waiting lounge. At approximately 7am a nurse came and got me and ran through lots of questions. It was then that I said goodbye to the hubby. The nurse took me to get a gown, hat, stockings, paper undies and paper slippers.
I then waited in a private lounge before the surgeon greeted me nd then the anesthetist met me and asked me questions.
Another nurse then came and got me and I was then asked to get onto the bed. I was wheeled into the entrance of the theatre and the anesthetist put the canular in. It didn't hurt a bit. Another nurse introduced herself and then before long I was wheeled into the
Theatre. Before I knew it I was out of it. I then woke in recovery with still the gown, paper undies, stockings and compressions on my legs.
I remember being asked lots of questions and then I remember being in the ward and hubby was there.
I had a PCA which I could press to administer pain relief. I remember being in pain initially but once I pressed the PCA it all disappeared and I was fast asleep again. I had the PCA for the first 36 hours and then just Panadol. I also had to wear an oxygen mask while in hospital. I got up mid afternoon the day of surgery to go to the toilet and the nurse helped me get to the toilet. After that first time I was fine to get up myself.
The first day passed in a daze and even most of the second day as I was still using the PCA. I had a swallow test to check for leaks on the second day and on the third day I was able to start clear liquids. I was discharged at 9am on the third day being a Friday.
The nurse called me on the Tuesday to check on me and yesterday the Dietician called me to check on me.
I hope this helps out a bit. Everyone's experience will slightly differ depending on the surgeon, hospital and nurses.

What to expect after op? Empty
PostSubject: Re: What to expect after op?   What to expect after op? EmptyWed 25 Sep 2013, 9:03 am

I was asleep about 12 hrs - even before they gave me the pre-op drugs. I woke up about 3:15am with 2 nurses sitting beside me. I had oxygen mask on and a monitor thingy on one hand, IV line in the other hand, leg compression things on both legs and I had the nurses poking me and telling me to not to roll over. I drifted off back to sleep and woke again about 6am with the desperate urge to pee ... it was then that I realised I went into surgery with paper knickers and a paper gown but now had no knickers and half a paper gown with a cloth gown over the top. For someone who is normally rather shy - I found I really didn't care but at the same time wished I had taken the time to tidy up down there ... lol

I wasn't in any real pain but getting up was a little uncomfortable and I needed a little assistance to get to up and too the loo.  For the next two days I mainly slept. I had rotten headaches and some pain swallowing but otherwise I wasn't too bad.  I can't say I had a lot of wind or gas.  I was given morphine regularly but that was mainly for the headaches - I get bad migraines and I think the changes really triggered them.

The removal of the drainage tube was painful (felt like by guts were being ripped out) but once it was removed there wasn't any residual pain.  Staple removal was relatively painfree ...

Hi, I had mine done this july. Post op I had no wound site pain but did have the gas pain. This lasted about 5 days and was pretty uncomfortable. Saying that I still was ok on regular panadol. I wasn't hungry at all but didnt have a huge amount of energy either. I also has post op nausea bad but that is just me with anaesthetics.
I got home and had 3 young kids to help lookafter and coped ook.i did make sure that I had arvo nanna naps. My advice is to just be prepared to go with the flow. Everyone has a slightly different experience but we all have our common goal! Good luck.

Hi there Cantikgal Try to read as many diaries as possible, especially from the same hospital, which will give you an insight into what to expect. I wrote just about everything down and I am sure a lot of others have as well. Research and Read this site; do a 'Search' for information you wish to know and you will be amazed; I think just about every question I have ever wanted to know is already written; or is answered. Great people, great site. Take care.
