| as long as I can keep my eyes on the ultimate goal and realise that ups and downs will happen along the way, I'm sure I can get there in the end I was also worried before banding that I was doomed to be fat, stuck in the 90's, and that has been a self-fulfilling prophecy! | |

| Hi Jarrah
when the band is working properly, I don't get hungry, I don't feel like eating and I have no interest in food...it's wonderful! but I've only enjoyed that for 3-4 months over 3 years...its encouraging to hear you say that is your current relationship with food and your sleeve
I go all gung-ho about an idea, etc and then I get the wobbles...I suppose it is a normal part of the decision making process.

| Hi Kazbo, I don't know what it's like for a bandit - sleever ... just my own experience which is only 6 months long. Goal weights?? Well I revised down my goal weight once I neared the one I had originally set. At the end of the day, however, I would be happy to stay at the weight I am now if that was what was meant to be. I am much healthier and a whole lot happier than I have been for decades! I know you'll have a massive amount of doubts and questions and all anyone can do is let you know how it was/is for them. .. but at the end of the day, everyone is different. I don't know how the band affects hunger ... but my sleeve has certainly significantly reduced my hunger and even my drive to eat unhealthy foods - I just don't want them. I still have them occasionally - which usually results in me remembering that I don't really like them anymore ! hahaha hard habits to break!! All I say is don't let one person's experience freak you out. As long as you are comfortable with your decision, you'll make your own way :) | |

| Thanks for that...I guess I feel kind of 'lucky' that I have already gone through the banding experience so the smaller meals, better quality of food, high nutritional value food, low alcohol/empty calorie consumption is already ingrained into my psyche. (as in I don't think it will be too much a culture shock when sleeved)
I've also learned (the hard way!) to slow down when I eat and I think that is an advantage too, and a habit I hope will continue once sleeved...it will have to be a bit of a re-education of my brain after the band removal and that little 'holiday' from restrictive surgery.
I am confident that, through healthy eating, regular exercise, and working with the sleeve and not against it, that I could get to my goal weight (80kgs but a dream would be 75kgs)...but talking to this lady last night gave me the wobbles about how effective sleeving might be for me (she was a virgin sleever).
It was good talking about the cycles that the WLS recipient go through - the ups and downs, happiness, contentment, frustration, anger, resentment and back to happiness that I (and anyone else I know who has had WLS) goes through.

| Hi Karen,
I honestly think that if you avoided alcohol most of the time and only enjoyed it every so often and didn't engage with high calorie foods most of the time then I definitely think you can get to your goal weight! You said your highest weight was 124kg, my highest has been 120kg and the lowest I have gotten with Jenny Craig was 89kg. I know that this can be accomplished again and I would have lost more weight had I been more disciplined. My goal is to between 75-79kg and I believe that you too can get much lower than the 90's. You just have to be careful with your eating habits, maintaining a healthy eating pattern. That's not to say that you cant have high calorie foods every now and then but the sleeve will go to waste if you start eating fatty crap every night of the week. Use the sleeve as a tool to compliment a healthy lifestyle change. You have already shown that you can lose weight and when you see your Surgeon they will more than likely tell you as mine did that weight loss is more effective with a sleeve than a band. Good luck for when you see your surgeon and I wish you all the best with your weight loss journey. Just have some faith in yourself :).

| Hi all
I'm Karen from Canberra, I was banded in August 2010 and now I want to get the band removed and then get sleeved. I know that the only way for me to lose and maintain weightloss is through surgery. My highest weight pre-band was 124kgs, my lowest banded weight was 92 kgs. My current weight fluctuates between 97-99 kgs.
I see Dr Jorgensen in Sydney in 2 weeks time to see if he will do a band reversal and then follow up with a sleeve. His clinic told me he waits 6 months between surgeries, which concerns me from a weight management perspective but reassures me from a recovery from surgery perspective.
I was chatting to a sleever last night, she was sleeved 2 years ago or so and she was 130 kgs and is now maintaining at 97kgs. Her lowest weight sleeved was 92-93 kgs. She admits to not following the rules (drinks alcohol regularly and also has high calorie food) but she said she is happy with her results given everything.
It got me to thinking...97 kgs is where I was always stuck before I had surgery when I dieted/exercised. I could never seem to get under that weight and maintain.
What if I am doomed to be 90-something kgs? Am I doomed to be fat not matter what actions I take?
These are the concerns I had prior to banding. I was reassured by my clinic that 'provided I followed the rules' I would reach my goal weight. Well, because of the inability to find the elusive green zone I haven't got to goal. I'm still faffing around with fills, etc. Which is why the sleeve is on my wish/want list.
But what if my body says 'no way are you getting the a normal weight'? what if my own personal, inbuilt natural weight IS 90-something kgs?
Does anyone here have the same or similar concerns? is anyone on here able to offer input/advice/experiences?
