| Well sold the Mazda, now have the money for surgery so off to see Mr Stuart Eaton in Ballarat on July 2nd. i also received a letter from the Alfred hospital saying i have pre- admission clinic on August 19th. Not completely sure what to do still, worried that there may be still a fair wait after pre-admission until surgery how many trips to Melb before and after surgery with other appts, although will save money...for a holiday or some needed house improvements....or have surgery in Ballarat where i can work in appts around work and have my choice of surgeon...anyway see Mr Eaton first the outpatient appt in Melb on 25th July so will make a decision definitely after that...at least now i have a choice sounds like all the new sleevers are going well and i love reading their ups and downs, pros and not many cons thankyou all and keep up the great work cheers | |

| Lynne, at the time I was trying to get on the list the Alfred were not accepting any more names! LOL, so I felt very blessed to find Box Hill. Their turn around time was supposed to be 18 months however due to budget cuts by the government at the start of this year, they postponed surgeries until after july 1st which pee'd me off as I was about to get mine done then! Oh well, it's all back on track :) | |

| Just remember that science backs us in making this decision. We are often told how simple it is, "eat less excercise more" and we are made to feel guilty time and time again when we fail. If we were 5 or 10kg overweight it might be different but our bodies think this is the correct size for them to be and fight us every step of the way. Same for a lean person, there has been studies where they over feed naturally lean people to see what happens and their metabolism adjusts, burning more calories to keep them lean because it is protecting the status quo! Cunning things our bodies. I made decision to tell everyone as I am not ashamed, I know it is the only option left for me, the only thing that will work. And if by talking openly about it I can help one person who is considering but worried about what everyone will think.....So arm yourself with knowledge and know any negative responses come from ignorance, it is time to stop feeling bad about ourselves, we have done enough of that!

| thankyou for the reply girls, most of the public ones are Lapband, apparently only about 20 public sleeves are done per year. I made an appt with Mr Stuart Eaton in Ballarat for July 12th for initial consult and will find out more about public appt on July 25th....i am thinking they will tell me they have reached their quota for the year...but you never know.. Anyway today i received another appt from the Alfred for a pre- admission appt on August 19th which was a bit of a surprise so will be interesting to see if it takes long after that...i can't imagine they would do a pre-admission and then wait 12 months for surgery as your health could change between the 2 appts Here's hoping....and no the car hasn't sold yet but i am thinking positive thoughts....so can't go wrong :) what a caring group of people on here...i find it very hard to tell people, i almost feel ashamed and a failure to have to resort to this drastic procedure but am trying to look at it as just an operation to improve my health, just the same as a hip replacement or gall bladder. i know i am doing this for me but people are so judgmental and negative and thats not what i need atm so have told my special friends and that is all
good luck to you both and i will watch your progress with interest
kind regards Lynne

| Hi Lynn I think most sleevers join a health fund due to the long wait in the public system, you do have to wait a year but as you go through all the stages you have to do it goes really fast.My surgeon was one of the lower rate ones which was great and I got a small personal loan for it which is paid in November. The only down side of waiting in the public system that I was warned about by one hospital was the government can change their policies and requirements for weight loss surgery at any time ,which means you can wait all that time and then the system changes and you may no longer qualify and you have blown all that time waiting for nothing. If you can sell your car or get a small loan I think that is a small price to pay rather than having to possibly have other weight related health issues arise, best to bite while the iron is hot if you can so health issues don't deteriorate. All the best for you. | |

| this is my very first post so hope it goes ok ... Hello all I love this site and came across it when researching all i could about the sleeve. i have friends who have had the Lap Band and although they have had initial success, long term, to me has not been successful enough, and after reading all the pros and cons for both procedures i am sure the sleeve will suit my needs better. i have been on the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne's public waiting list for nearly 4 years now, and have finally met with both lap band and sleeve surgeons and have now been put on waiting list which according to the letter i received last week said it could take up to 365 days :( i was so disappointed. i received another letter the next day with another appt for July 25th. When i rang to ask what it was for the clerk said it was because of a complication....SO NOW WHAT Anyway i did take out PHI with HCF last year which waiting time is up June 20th so that is my backup plan. i don't have the money yet but will when my car sells so whichever comes first, but i am SOOOO READY for this... please let me know if anyone else out there has been on the Alfred Hospital list or been sleeved by the surgeons there. thankyou to you all for your posts and invaluable information and inspiring photos and i can't wait to be 'one of you' | |
