| Hi I had to have the same thing a week before my surgery as my blood test come back with high potassium level the test was done and the specialist said it looked fine and said the antitheist will contact you if there is a problem but all went fine I think they like to make sure there are no hidden dangers which might complicate surgery good luck with you op | |

| Hi Samj,
I don't think your GP can ever be too cautious. I think your lucky that your GP is concerned enough to go the extra yards to ensure your safety. While it may have freaked you out having her bring up this issue it shows she is a thorough and caring Dr. At the very least it has now given the Surgeon and anaesthetist extra info about your heart and it's now up to them if they want the echocardiogram. Sounds like your in good hands to me.
cheers Nini. | |

| Thank you all so much for replying, you've made me feel much better, especially Sandy :). I've rang the surgeons offices today and told them I'm faxing the stress report to them, she was very good and said she'd get doctor to look at it when he's in tomorrow and he'd contact the anaesthetist about it.
Thanks again for your support, it means a lot :) Sam

Don't panic! My Dad had his first heart attack aged 32 and every member of his family has some sort of hideous heart disease. So far my younger sister & I are lucky to have escaped any heart probs. I had an echo years ago after my older sister passed away unexpectedly and had an ECG a couple of months pre-op and one on the day of surgery (age related not due to anything else).
Contact the anaethetists office and see if you can get in to see him/her in person before the day of surgery. Or he/she might just do a phone consult with you. Take as much info with you as you can & let him/her decide!
Don't let your GP freak you out
cheers

| These issues should be discussed with the surgeon and the anesthetist both my surgeon and anesthetist where contactable before so give them a ring sooner rather then later. I will say if the surgeon hasn't asked for these things already I don't think he will require them but definitely check with the anesthetist he is the one in charge of that area. | |

| Hi SamJ
I am sorry to hear your father died so young. My Mum died at 39 from cancer so I understand any concerns you may have about your health.
To be honest I think your GP is being silly (having said that I am not a doctor LOL) Just ring your anesthetist's office and have a chat with them after all they are the ones in the know when it comes to this stuff.
Good luck and try to not "stress" about it.

| It sounds like your gp is perhaps being overly cautious, you should be able to contract the anaesthetist pre op if you are concerned though. I had a nurse from the anaesthetists office go through a health assessment with me pre op on the phone | |

| I would think if the gas wanted you to have one he would have contacted you. Have you been under before? Btgirl | |

| Hi everyone :)
I'm due to be sleeved in 9 days time, and whilst very nervous, I'm so excited too.
BUT.. Today my GP has me very worried about the anaesthetic and possible problems I may have as my dad died aged 42 from heart related issues (had his first heart attack at 36!). She had already made me go for a stress test, which came back normal, but she's not happy as apparently she wanted an Echo stress test done (heart is xrayed at same time I think, not sure tbh) and it wasn't.. My cholesterol is low (4.3), my bp is always low (76/92), ive never smoked and the stress test is normal! She said the anaesthetist might not do the surgery without the Echo test... Is she just being a bit cautious? Or could she be right? I don't want my surgery cancelled on the day but I don't want to die either!! (Lol)
I told my surgeon I was going for a stress test and he just said 'that's a good idea (given my family history)' but didn't seem over concerned or even want to know the results, I don't see him again until day of surgery.
Is it possible to contact the anaesthetist beforehand to discuss this, would anyone know?
Thanks heaps Sam
