| Hi everybody, I'm only new. I've researched different surgeons, and I've read so many good things about Dr Chris Couch. My hospital cover starts 1st July next year, and I'm wondering how many months before hand should I go for a referral and book an appointment with the surgeon? I was thinking maybe 3 months? What kind of wait times did you all have? Thanks for any help.

| Thank you so much Sleeverella, WondaWendy, Milly 2010 and anyone else I have missed that took the time and effort t reply to my post back in September.
I have had a personal upheaval in my family life and have not logged into the GSS Site until tonight and have just now seen your replies....thankyou..... I feel embarrassed that it has been over a month since you so kindly replied but that it has taken me this long to sort myself out....I am truly sorry and grateful that you did take the time.
My appointment with Dr Couch is thankfully next Wednesday 29/10......a little ray of sunshine after a bleak past month.
I hope everyone that has had Surgery in the past month has recovered well and are looking forward to a brighter healthier future. I hope to be joining you soon.
Sleeverella I have sent you a PM about catching up even though from your reply it would seem that you have already had the Surgery. x
Thanks again everyone for replying to my initial post on this Forum.

| Milly2010 - I agree, so good you are in remission. You go girl :-)
Sleeverella - how exciting for you. 9 weeks is so much better than the original 8 - 9 months I was looking at here in Bunbury. You said you are very south. I'm in Australind - anywhere near me?

| Hi Guys,
Milly2010, I missed your last post til now. So glad you are in remission. How strong you must be. Maybe we should start a walking group thread for areas? I'm very south.
carollsadler, I think everyone is getting busier with quite a bit of positive press about sleeving lately. I didn't want to wait another minute. I was also worried that funding might tighten with the increase in number of ops. I guess it is getting close to Christmas holiday block out dates now too.
For me, yes, was about 3 weeks for initial appointment from memory. 2nd appointment a couple of weeks after the first one. Op date about 4 weeks after that. So all up from 1st phonecall to op date about 9 weeks.
My op is a week away now and I will post some info about how it goes.

| I live in Australind and found out Friday that Dr Werapitiya's first available consultation is late January 2015. Devasted. After finally making a decision to act and the thought of waiting that long....I was looking at Chris Couch on the net, so very happy to have read all your comments :-)
Was wondering, between the intial consult (which seems about a 4 week wait), how long after your consult before surgery?
Thanks. | |

| Hello Gallopingwishes
I had my sleeve done by Chris Couch in October last year. He also my band and removal of the band so I am more than happy to refer him to anyone. I have found him to be approachable and has always made sure I am well informed and make the best choices I can.
I am very happy to have had the sleeve done but in March this year was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Part of the symptoms is weight loss so I didnt know anything was wrong. However I had to go under specialists who insisted I maintain a body weight of 80 kgs so had to eat lots and little and anything I could to maintain the weight at or around 80ks. Hard to do when the chemotherapy made me very sick just after treatment.
I have recently been advised that after months of chemotherapy I am in remission. Now I am able to kick start my weight loss again without becoming sick. Unfortunately I am know struggling with trying to lose any weight as I have spent months eating lots and cant kick the habit. The weight is slowly creeping back on so I need to get something sorted and fast.
I hope that you make the best choice for you and Chris will make sure you have all the information you need to make that choice. I will never regret having it done for sure as approx 25kgs has gone in total (give or take a few right at the moment - haha).
I need a walking partner too sleeverella! Maybe we could all get together and start a walking group. :=)

| Hiya Gallopingwishes.
FIRSTLY, GOOD ON YOU FOR TAKING THE FIRST STEP. SECONDLY, DON'T WORRY.
I'm being sleeved in 2.5 weeks by Chris Couch at Waikiki. I was scared too and felt the same way as you. I was even imagining questions and practising answers. (FFS!!) Was so worried he'd say "No". Just goes to show how committed to changing my weight problem I was before I even saw him I reckon. Anyway, went in with referral, basically said I'm not happy about my weight and I'm here about that. He checked my height & weight. He then explained the different procedures band v sleeve etc... And explained other related stuff (like I'm 2.5 more times likely to die early than if my BMI was normal) We discussed it from there and what may be appropriate for me. I didn't feel any judgement or get 3rd degree whatsoever. He was however very thorough and patient with my questions (I always have lots). He has done hundreds of sleeve ops at Waikiki. I've had other surgery there before too and it was all good there. I'm 47 with a young child so a bit older but not so much!!! I have the double whammy of being chubby at the school gate and prolly the oldest as well!!! Not sure where you are located but it may be that you are not far away and we could chat/coffee? I'm keen for exercise/walking buddy too if that is of any interest at some point? PM me if you want to. Feel free to throw any questions at me.
I should add that since my 1st appointment I've been very busy cleaning closets, sorting clothes, pantry, hairdos, plastic surgery. It's been much better than feeling sad and frustrated.
Wonderwendy by the way, is awesome as support goes on this site. Her op is on Monday coming if I'm not mistaken.
The very best of luck will be going out to you from so many on Monday Wendy.

| Welcome Gallopingwishes, don't worry at all about what you know. The surgeon will explain it all to you and not expect you to be the expert. If the surgeon finds you are a candidate weight wise, and you don't have any health circumstances that could prevent it, you should be fine. It doesn't hurt that you show you have spent time considering it and are committed to making the life changes necessary for the sleeve to do its job though.
I think if you are feeling emotional, or think you might become over-emotional talking to the surgeon, it might be good that you have this extra month and a bit to wrap your head around it all, do any research that you want to, follow experiences of sleeved members on here, etc. however, I'm sure he will have had it all before, and worse, lol. Your reasons for wanting the sleeve that you stated on here are very valid however.
I'm not sure if you've been here much, but you will find it a very supportive and helpful. You read the good, the bad and the ugly side of sleeve surgery, and along the way can become totally inspired by some fabulous success stories.

| Subject: Initial Consult with Dr Couch booked for 29/10/14 Sat 20 Sep 2014, 1:02 pm | |
| Hi Everyone, Not too sure what to write as I am brand new to this Site and this is my first post. Just wanted to share the date of my Initial Consultation with Dr Couch is at Waikiki Private Hospital on 29/10/14. I was a bit disappointed it wasn't earlier but then thought hey I've been overweight for nearly 43 years so another month wait to see him and get the ball rolling isn't so bad!
Just a bit unsure what will be discussed at the Initial Consult? Do I have to go in there and prove that I know all the ins and outs and pros and cons of the Surgery and give heaps of reasons why I want the Surgery or is being Morbidly Obese reason enough? I feel like I need to study for an exam!
I'm also a bit worried as the only Person I have discussed the Surgery with so far is my Hubby and I cried and cried about not wanting to die while our children are young (we have a toddler and a baby) and wanting to be able to take them to swimming lessons and be active with them and not be the Mum that the other kids make fun of at the School Gate.........so I have a feeling that when I get to see Dr Couch that I may burst into tears when we discuss my reasons for wanting the Surgery. I've a VERY unattractive crier and I will be mortified but am I right in thinking that this is such an emotional journey for all of us that many people become highly emotional when discussing their Surgery with their Surgeon?
Sorry that was such a long winded first post. x

| Hi. Just thought I would add in that Chris is my surgeon. He did my band three years ago, took it out four months ago and on Friday 11th will be doing my sleeve as well. All done in Waikiki Hospital. I highly recommend him. He is very thorough and even though I am border line with the BMI he was happy to do my surgery. Four weeks from consult and paying my gap of $3500 to surgery date.
I wouldnt go to anyone else now. I love his staff and even the hospital was awesome. A bit quieter than the city hospitals as it is smaller (well where the ward where I was is anyways) which I like.
Good luck with your journey.

| Hi To you both, I haven't been on here for a few months. Dr Couch is great. I wish you both well. Keep reading the forum's and join your month's sleeve group. It was a lifesaver for me especially with the little questions about what to take to hospital, what to eat/drink, motivation etc. Good luck xx | |

| I am getting sleeves by couch at Waikiki private on Friday the 13th September. I had to wait about 4 weeks for my initial appointment, he went thru lap banding and sleeping with me, made his recommendations on which I should have ect and then sent me away to think about it, I went away on holiday and booked in another appointment which was 3 weeks wait and asked if it was available on the above date cause that fitted in with work and it was all clear :-) cost me $3500 out of pocket and the. To see his dietician will be $400 but that's for several appointments :-) | |

| Thankyou so much for getting back to me, Im a bit worried as i have been waiting for this for so long and wanting it for so long, im worried he will turn me away. He turned my mum away although she had other problems aswell. Could you tell me a bit more about how the whole process goes.? How long it took you after seeing him for the first time till surgery day? And one other strange question, where does the acid go when that cut/blanch your stomach?
Thankyou so much once again, any information you have about your whole process with him i would love to here.
