Hospital costs

Hi everyone,

I want to go for the sleeve surgery, but my PHI does not pay for Hospital. The sleeve cost $1250 and with the dietician, psycologist and surgeon fees it all comes to $1700 out of pocket fees.

If I go public then I will have to wait approxiately 12 months or more, but I dont want to wait that long. So I thought i might pay everything myself and claim back from my PHI what i can. (like dietician and psycologist fees).

Can anyone tell me, more or less, how much it is to stay in hospital for 3 days. I will be going to Joondalup Health Campus in Perth. Ive tried to phone them but they say they can only tell me if i have a code. I need to get from my dr and I will only get that the 28 November.

Does it really cost round $15000? If it does, I will not be able to have this surgery.

I am going to Hollywood hospital all up nearly $16000 that includes everything though and follow up visits.

I applied for early release of super funds and was approved. My health insurance does not kick in until Aug next year. Have you considered applying for super? I am not an expert but i can tell you what I did if you like?

Approx Costs at SJOGH

Bed on ward about $1000 per day (I had 4 days)
Theatre Fees about $2000
Stapling about $1800 (for staples and gun - 1 time use)
Gas Man about $1500
Surgeon Assistant about $200
Basic Pathology about $120
Stockings about $20

ICU or HDU will be about $2000-$5000 per day if required
Extra Pathology will be charged if needed
If you have leak test, X-rays,scans etc - these will be extra too

So, yes the costs add up pretty quick.
