| As a Theatre RN, it is my experience that it is entirely the Surgeon's preference. Some Surgeon's absolutely do insist on shaving the relevant region for laparoscopic surgeries (plus you also need to be mindful that whilst it is hoped that surgery will be via laparoscopic means, sometimes there are medical reasons that prevent this and therefore open surgery is carried out). Hairs can interfere with the suture lines and be a cause of concern for infection. Likewise, it is really important for the skin to be shaved correctly. Cuts, abrasions and the like result in the skin barrier being compromised and is thus another portal for infection. So MarMay, in answer to your questions, it is purely Surgeon's preference. He would have either given you pre-op instructions asking you to shave the night before or get the Nurses to do the shave when you are admitted. If it is concerning you, ring the Surgeon's rooms and ask, no harm in asking. Again, from experience, it is very rare that females get shaved for abdominal laparoscopic surgeries (unless they are exceptionally hairy). All the very best! | |

| Hi All I have a strange question for anyone who's been sleeved. It might sound a little silly but about 8 years ago I had to get my gallbladder removed and I had rarely noticeable tiny tiny blonde baby hairs on my ab and lower tummy area. As I was waiting to be called for surgery a nurse came in and said u need to shave ur tummy. Mortified I said wat for? She said Dr ? doesn't like any hair in the area he has to work with. I showed her my tummy and said honestly do u think this needs shaving she said no I don't but Doc won't operate. So I did really quickly coz was nearly my turn got a million litle cuts Does anyone know if this is surgeons preference or do hairs interfere with surgical equipment? So has anyone had to shave?? Oh and as it grew back it came back thicker, darker, coarser and longer than what it was to begin with. | |
